Easy Urban Sketching with Fountain Pens

You will learn the basics of how to set up an Urban Sketch: big shapes, shadows and color. Urban Sketching is a relaxing and interesting way to learn to see the world around you.  We will sketch outside (weather permitting, I will email everyone if the location changes..) Fountain Pens are excellent for Urban Sketching! Do you like to doodle? Want to turn your scribbles into a meditative practice? The Zentangle method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful art by drawing structured patterns. Appealing to artists and non-artists alike, the simple repetitive strokes used to create patterns encourage focus, create calm quiet time and as a bonus produce a rewarding piece of art when finished. Zentangle is also helpful for sharpening focus while listening – a great practice for lectures, meetings, and audio books. In this class we’ll introduce the Zentangle method as we complete a 3.5 inch square paper tile and bookmark.

We’ll explore different layering techniques and various types of PET tapes to add depth and dimension to your designs. By the end of the class, you’ll know how to maximize the potential of PET tapes to craft a beautifully layered 3D postcard—perfect as a unique and thoughtful gift for family and friends.

Instructor Bio:
Judy Kuo, founder of Tokubetsumemori, began creating tape collages on postcards in 2016. In 2021, she started making international appearances online through her Twitch streams, where she introduced viewers to tape collaging. In 2024, Judy hosted her first in-person workshop at the Yoseka Stationery Fest. Since then, she has continued teaching at various stationery events, sharing her love for tapes and helping others explore the creative potential of collage using washi and PET tapes.


Abstract Floral Art and Lettering

 Join Carola (@FromCarola) in practicing a fun and unique style of abstract floral art using Dual Brush Pens to create a watercolor effect on paper. In this interactive class, we’ll explore various blending techniques and hand lettering basics to make an affirmation card. Watch as Carola demonstrates how to paint freehand floral outlines and then draw details on top – then try it out yourself! No prior painting or hand lettering experience needed.

Materials: Each participant will receive a supply kit (included in workshop fee) – a paint brush, a fine liner, Tombow Dual Brush Pens, Blending Palette and paper. You’ll also walk away with a handout of tips and techniques along with floral stickers created by Carola.

Join Shasta Garcia of Play Ethic Studio for an analog workshop where you’ll find the fun and creativity in planning and intentional reflection. In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll make a Cross Structure blank book using fountain pen-friendly paper.
The structure involves sewing the text block while the cover straps are folded and interlaced at the spine, allowing them to lie completely flat, and is inspired by historical, long-stitch medieval structures.

Instructor Bio: Cheryl has taken Master Classes in bookbinding with Dominic Riley and Michael Burke and has completed the Bookbinding Certification at the San Francisco Center for the Book.
She brought her love of bookmaking to her former position as Art Coordinator at a San Francisco Public Elementary-Middle School, and now the students there create original, story-filled, bound books and participate in the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition each year. Cheryl alsoteaches annually at the San Francisco Pen Show and is an avid fountain pen enthusiast.

Join us for an interactive seminar on how to improve your everyday handwriting with Kimberly Lau (@allthehobbies on IG) who started her own handwriting journey in 2017 after discovering fountain pens. Kimberly will walk you through the different aspects of handwriting, providing tips and techniques to get you improving your handwriting in no time.

In this hands-on workshop, we will create wax seal charms by combining a variety of ribbons, yarns, and wax seals to craft a beautiful piece that is uniquely yours. Foundational Broad-Edge Calligraphy

Instructor: Michelle Chu

Foundational Hand is a great script for beginners and is the basis for many other scripts using this type of nib (called broad-edge), such as Italic, Gothic, Uncial, and more. Each letter is based on the circular “o” shape and offers a nice balance between thicker and thinner strokes. You will learn by practicing the strokes that are commonly used to form each letter of the script. Each student will also receive a pen holder, nib, jar of ink, and different types of paper, as well as a short guide of each stroke, so they can keep their foundational hand calligraphy practice going!

Price: $80 for 3 hours

 Join Carola (@FromCarola) in practicing a fun and unique style of abstract floral art using Dual Brush Pens to create a watercolor effect on paper. In this interactive class, we’ll explore various blending techniques and hand lettering basics to make an affirmation card. Watch as Carola demonstrates how to paint freehand floral outlines and then draw details on top – then try it out yourself! No prior painting or hand lettering experience needed.

French Link Stitch Bookbinding Workshop

In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll make a French Link Stitch blank book using fountain pen-friendly paper. This binding technique originated in 16th-century France and is a popular decorative binding when left exposed. It is a variation of the Coptic binding with a series of looping X patterns stitched along the spine and is a type of “lay-flat” binding.

Instructor Bio: Cheryl has taken Master Classes in bookbinding with Dominic Riley and Michael Burke and has completed the Bookbinding Certification at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She brought her love of bookmaking to her former position as Art Coordinator at a San Francisco Public Elementary-Middle School, and now the students there create original, story-filled, bound books and participate in the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition each year. Cheryl also teaches annually at the San Francisco Pen Show and is an avid fountain pen enthusiast.

In this hands-on workshop, we will create wax seal charms by combining a variety of ribbons, yarns, and wax seals to craft a beautiful piece that is uniquely yours. This technique encourages creative freedom, with endless possibilities for mixing and matching. Whether you prefer a larger statement charm or a delicate piece for your mini journal, you’ll be able to create a combination that perfectly suits your style.

During this workshop, we will be working with fire and glue gun, please be careful, don’t burn yourself!
